More Than a Prop
Designed by Robert Kinoshita, Robby was the most expensive cinematic prop of its time, costing roughly $125,000 in 1956. Unlike previous “tin man” robots, Robby was a functional masterpiece of mechanical engineering.
Key Technical Specs
-
Power Source: In-universe, Robby is powered by isotopes, but the suit itself required a complex harness for the operator (Frankie Darro).
-
The “Brain”: The rotating scanners and neon tubes in the head were synchronized to suggest a high-level data processing unit—a precursor to modern AI concepts.
-
Versatility: Robby was famous for his “molecular synthesizer,” capable of replicating anything from evening gowns to 60 gallons of “genuine” Kentucky bourbon.
